Public Money Wasted On Peshawar BRT: Report

A new report on the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on Wednesday said that large sums of public money has been wasted due to ‘faulty planning and designing, negligence in execution of work, and poor management of the project’.

The 27-page report prepared by the Provincial Inspection Team (PIT) on orders of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Mehmood Khan revealed that the BRT project was poorly planned. It also revealed that ‘some people’ received Rs 7 billion in kickbacks.

Moreover, some government officials blame the foreign consultant hired for approximately Rs1.5 billion for the flawed design.

“The BRT has caused loss to the public exchequer as quantities of the items having exorbitant quoted rates have been increased while those having zero rates have been deleted.”

The report also highlighted ‘shadiness of affairs’ at play in the project.

KP Information Minister Shaukat Yousufzai said that the provincial government was looking into the matter and that all issues and recommendations will be addressed soon.

He said that the KP government was aware of the problems faced by the public and the BRT project will be completed as soon as possible.

The inspection unit raised serious reservations over the project and said that it was not properly planned out and initiated in haste.

The team has found that the route was constructed without feasibility, geotechnical, sewerage, traffic and water supply studies undertaken.

Sources told Express Tribune that one of the major flaws in the project was miscalculation of the entire elevation section. This means that the city will suffer from severe traffic jams for mixed traffic as long as the problem persists.

The source said that two traffic signals, the ones at Peshawar Club and BRT elevator, are just 50 metres apart. “How is it possible for traffic to move smoothly with two signals just 50 metres apart,” he asked.
