Fazl Calls Out ‘Institutions’ Over Enforced Disappearances
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has called out institutions over enforced disappearances during a speech to Azadi March participants in Islamabad.
The JUI-F chief stated that there are many people today who have been abducted in the name of terrorism and their whereabouts are still unknown.
He questioned if any institution had a right to detain a Pakistani citizen on the basis of suspicion or intelligence reports, and that these people remain in detention for 10-15 years without their families knowing where they were.
“If these people have committed a crime, then why aren’t they produced in court?” the JUI-F chief asked.
The JUI-F chief said that there was no such court in Pakistan, and that there were only courts for politicians and asked, “Don’t these disappeared people have a right according to the constitution and by virtue of being a Pakistani citizen to be tried in court?”
If the state would engage in such measures against Pakistani citizens, then we could say that there exists state terrorism in Pakistan.
