HRCP Condemns Govt’s Decision To Restrict Media Coverage Of Convicts
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has issued a statement condemning the federal cabinet’s decision to introduce a bill prohibiting the coverage of ‘convicts and absconders’. According to the HRCP, the step violates people’s democratic and political rights.
Such curbs on the media and the government's political rivals may eventually return to haunt the government. No #democracy can function effectively without an independent media. 2/2

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan while addressing the press on Wednesday said that a bill restricting media coverage for convicts had been passed by the cabinet.
Analysts say that this not only is a violation of people’s fundamental rights, but also an attempt by the government to limit the coverage of political opposition in the country.
