‘Total Ban On Venturing Out Of Your Homes’: India’s 21-Day Lockdown Begins Tonight

MUMBAI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown of the entire country in view of the rising number of Coronavirus patients in the country.

In a televised address the Indian PM told the Indian nation that there will be a ‘total ban on venturing out of your homes’. The number of Coronavirus patients in the country has crossed 400 according to the official statistics but the data scientists in India are claiming that the true number could be well above 200,000.

The number is expected to cross a million by mid-May according to health researchers in India. These estimates have prompted the government to take firm action and shut down all educational institutions, business, and air and train travel.

“The only way to save ourselves from coronavirus is if we don’t leave our homes, whatever happens, we stay at home,” Modi said in his address. This is the second address in a week’s time by the Indian premier.

As the global tally crosses 400 thousand on March 24, most countries are now opting for the lockdown as the last resort to ‘flatten the curve’ before a vaccine is developed.
