In A First, Trans Woman Recruited In Rawalpindi Police

In an act to empower marginalised genders, Rawalpindi police has recruited Reem Sharif, a prominent transgender rights activist. Reem has become the first trans woman to join the police services in Pakistan.

On this unforgettable occasion, a digital media outlet MM News quoted the transgender rights activist as saying that through this opportunity she would try to address the ‘most pressing issues’ currently being faced by the transgender community. “I knew I needed to live my life and be true to who I was. I need to be honest with myself, and that was coming out as a transgender woman,” she said.

Reem Sharif further said that she don’t consider the newly-achieved position as a career ladder but a milestone to represent her community. “My presence will make it easy for the transgender community to report the gender-based crimes being done to them,” she added.

The news outlet also reported that Rawalpindi Women’s Police Station will establish a separate unit for transgender community, wherein their complaints will be addressed promptly.
